Bedford
Twp.'s Jeff Myers Jr. races to 3rd and 5th in National points standings.
It's
official! the World Karting Association released the Final Manufacturer's Cup
Point Standings October 29. Bedford Twp.'s own Jeff Myers Jr. made the top 5 in
2 classes finishing 3rd in Yamaha Jr. Sportsman and 5th in HPV Jr. Sportsman.
http://www.worldkarting.com/pg/series/mc/mc-standings.html Two top 5's are an
awesome accomplishment for the 10-yr.-old's first full year of National competition.
The series features the best young racers from all over the country.
Jeff
will receive trophies for his accomplishment at Daytona International Speedway,
December 28. The weekend also marks the beginning of the 2008 racing season. The
'08 National schedule includes races at Daytona, Florida and Lowes Motor Speedway
in Charlotte, North Carolina before coming back to the Midwest for races in Wisconsin,
Illinois, and Indiana.
Thanks to all our friends, family and sponsors
who have supported us over the past year. We're looking forward to doing it again
next season and there are a lot of exciting plans in the works!
J2
RACING in the news..
In
November in a packed auditorium, Jeff Myers Jr. collected 2 significant awards
to add to the trophy mantle. Jeff finished 3rd in the WKA Great Lakes Sprint Series
points championship in BOTH of the 2 cycle Jr. Sportsman classes: Yamaha Jr. Sportsman
and HPV Jr. Sportsman. Jeff won a pole and a race in Yamaha, won the last race
of the year in HPV, and was up front in both of the regional classes much of the
season.
The
GLSS series is known for producing some of the most competitive racing in the
country has been the training grounds for professional racers including Sam Hornish
Jr., Danica Patrick, and Ricky Rudd.
We're
working on our 2007 program - details are still being finalized but the goal is
to run a full, 5 race national schedule which will start in Jacksonville, Florida
in March. We're getting advice from some of the best folks in racing who've given
Jeff high marks and have encouraged him to compete on a national level. Jeff is
excited about the challenge and is looking forward to a FUN 2007!
In
2007, East Lansing Kart Track Champion Jeff Myers Jr. will compete in a full national
schedule racing on a new Birel chassis. J2 Racing took delivery of the Jr. Sportsman
chassis over the Christmas Holiday and preparations are well underway to get ready
for the first national race of the season in Jacksonville, Florida, March 9-11.
After winning the last WKA divisional race of the 2006 season at South Bend (MRP),
Jeff was asked to return and privately test the Birel chassis. South Bend/MRP
is the American importer for the Italian kart manufacturer. The Birel chassis
was also used by past national champions in the same class where Jeff Jr. now
competes. Jeff, a 4th grader at Monroe Rd. Elementary school, had a blast coming
back to MRP where he scored his last win and really felt the Birel was quicker
- the stop watch confirmed it! Although VERY satisfied with the 2006 chassis and
results, J2 Racing felt this was the way to go for 2007 and is extremely excited
to compete on a professionally prepared Birel chassis.
Every year, Jeff
Jr. takes just a little bigger step to compete against tougher competition, BUT
it's still more about enjoying new experiences while facing the new challenges.
The first race in Florida is really going to be a lot of fun and J2 Racing is
already looking forward to the family trip.
Kart
Racer named Driver of the Year- Jeff Myers Jr.
Two weeks ago, Bedford Twp.'s Jeff Myers Jr. was enjoying his 10th birthday.
Last Saturday night, Jeff Jr. was celebrating with family again as he was named
2006 "Driver of the Year" at the East Lansing Kart Track (ELKT) banquet.
In 2006, Jeff Jr. won two track championships with numerous wins at East Lansing
and completed a very successful season at the regional level. All combined to
give Jeff the edge for Driver of the Year over ALL of the junior AND senior racers
that compete at East Lansing.
East Lansing is well know in the racing
community as one of the most competitive kart tracks in the country attracting
the best kart racers in the Ohio-Michigan-Indiana area. Many current racing stars
such as Sam Hornish Jr. and Danica Patrick got their start racing karts and competing
at ELKT.
Florida Trip - Great fun and experience!
Kart racing season started early for Bedford Twp.'s J2 Racing as Jeff Myers Jr.
hit the road for the first National Race of the year in Jacksonville, Florida.
It's the furthest the team has ever traveled for a race - all that can be said
after is: what a great experience!
Filled with optimism and new equipment,
Jeff, age 10, hit the track for Friday practice for what was probably one of the
teams worst days ever in karting. If it wasn't the carburetor or engine, it was
little nagging issues that normally get sorted out before a big race. But with
4 inches of fresh snow on the ground in Michigan, there was no such luck to shake-down
fresh motors on a new Birel chassis. Jeff got little practice on a track he'd
never seen before. The times Jeff did get on the track, he got tangled up with
other karts. It was not a productive day and a tough way to open the '07 season.
Saturday, in Yamaha Jr. Sportsman, the team hoped for better and got it!
Jeff qualified a solid 13th. In the pre-final, he impressively worked his way
through the field into 7th place. But on his way into 6th place, the 2 karts made
slight contact and Jeff spun losing all the ground he'd gained. However, he still
managed to work his way back to 18th. In the 20 lap final race, Jeff put on a
show! Jeff passed 10 karts in the main event and placed a solid top-ten finish,
8th, in just his 2nd WKA National Manufacturer's Cup race! Some of the passes
Jeff made were a thrill to watch. An interesting note - the kart that Jeff contacted
while passing in the pre-final, won the feature event. Jeff can definitely compete
with the front-runners! Official Results: http://www.worldkarting.com/pg/series/amb/mylaps_results.html?runid=482307
Sunday, in HPV Jr. Sportsman, the team hoped for similar results even though there
was little time on the engine. Jeff struggled and could only manage to qualify
19th due to carb problems. After a talk with the engine builder, the team hoped
to improve in the pre-final race. But after a ragged start, the kids in front
of Jeff checked-up, Jeff made contact, lost his nose and was black flagged. The
good news, the carb adjustment worked and Jeff was up to speed. Starting 22nd,
Dad made a few changes to the chassis and Jeff was off and running. Jeff passed
a kart on the first lap and worked his way to a fine 14th place finish - improving
9 positions. Jeff was later awarded 13th, after the 4th place kart was dq'd when
the kart didn't pass tech. Official Results: http://www.worldkarting.com/pg/series/amb/mylaps_results.html?runid=482344
Jeff and Dad both left the Jacksonville feeling very optimistic about the
rest of the season - both learned a ton and can't wait to race again in April.
The team is REALLY looking forward to the next national race in South Bend. Jeff
had some success in divisional races at South Bend in 2006, qualifying on pole
in Yamaha and winning the last race of the year in HPV. South Bend is also the
home track for our chassis, Birel - the team hopes to make them proud with good
results.
Special thanks to all of sponsors, especially Jim and Cathy
Moses (J. Moses Construction) who came to watch Jeff race on Friday and Saturday.
Thanks also to Birel / MRP - the team is VERY excited about the rest of the season.

J2
Racing Spring Update It's
been a BUSY few weeks after a great National run in Florida in March... Jeff returned
to South Bend, Indiana (MRP) where he's tasted some success and had some good
runs in '06. A good result at Birel's home track would further solidify Jeff's
national ranking.
But luck just wasn't on our side this April. We raced
at MRP at the Midwest Sprint Series Divisonal race 2 weeks ago to prepare for
last week's nationals - basically had fair results. Jeff finished mid-pack, 12th
out of a huge divisional field of 24 karts in Yamaha class. Sunday in HPV, Jeff
was got caught back in the pack and Jeff had to fight his way up through the field.
During the race, he made contact with a couple of inexperienced drivers and was
penalized for rough driving. Both of us didn't agree with the officials call,
but took our lumps and hoped for a better weekend at the Nationals the following
weekend (May 4-6).
At the WKA Nationals we really wanted to perform well
for Birel/MRP. Felt we had the right package to do so, but again, bad luck put
us back in the field. After getting caught in traffic during qualifying, Jeff
had to start at the rear of the field for the pre-final in Yamaha. On the 2nd
corner of the first lap, Jeff was rear-ended and pushed off the track. He continued
on to finish the pre-final, but he'd have to start in the back for the feature
race. In the Final we were optimistic that we had a good set-up on the kart and
would move up through the field - Yamaha is our strongest class. But after a great
start passing several karts, Jeff was again taken out on the first lap. Jeff checked
up for an accident ahead of him and the kart behind Jeff ran him over and ended
up on top of Jeff's engine ending his day. Both boys were ok but the 2 karts were
locked together. In a show of good sportsmanship, lifted the other drivers kart
off of his kart and the other driver was able to continue. Unfortunately, Jeff
was done for the day as there was damage to Jeff's engine. That's racing!
Sunday in HPV brought a new day and we both hoped for better results. But
in the morning warm-up, we had a problem with the engine and had to borrow an
ignition coil from another team in order to race (Thanks Prime family!). Once
again we were behind and Jeff qualified again in the rear - it was looking like
another repeat from Saturday's racing! However, Jeff moved up a few positions
in the pre-final and then made some good passes in the Final for a top 20 finish.
The kart was fast and we improved slightly from last years results in HPV. After
our bad luck on Saturday, we were both just happy to get through a race cleanly
w/o any contact. We're both still fired up for the rest of the season and anxious
to race again in 2 weeks at the Great Lakes Sprint Series opener in Circleville,
Ohio. Like last year, Jeff will compete the full GLSS series.
Last, those
folks local to Toledo, look for Jeff on the Channel 11 news on Wednesday night.
Jeff is doing a promotional event at Palmyra - we hope to get some good exposure
for all of our sponsors, Birel and MRP. Be sure to tune in and see what's happening
- who knows, may even be an interview in there!
May
Update: Hey Everyone...
Just back from Circleville, Ohio
for the opening race of the Great Lakes Sprint Series, (WKA Divisional Series).
Jeff had a great season last year with the GLSS, 2 wins, a pole and several other
top 3's. Our 2007 program includes a full GLSS schedule.
Saturday in a
16 kart field, Jeff qualified 5th and finished 6th in the Final. We're satisfied
that we qualified towards the front of the field - had hoped to compete for top
4 but were just a little off on a very sticky track. Congratulations to Kyle Noonan
on his first divisional win! Absolutely a great weekend for Noonan Racing with
great performances in Cadet, Yamaha and HPV classes. (Dad Noonan had 5 entries
over the weekend for his 2 sons - that in itself was awesome.)
Sunday,
Jeff again was a 5th place kart in HPV. In the pre-final, Jeff got up to 3rd place
but slipped back to 5th. In the Final we'd hoped for better, but it appears we
were destined to be a 5th place kart. Overall, we wanted better results, BUT are
encouraged that we got through the weekend incident free as compared to the past
several races.
Off the track, all kinds of things are happening. On Sunday
at Circleville, Jeff's oldest sister Kristy sang the National Anthem in a duet
with Calli Snell (Christian Pahud's sister). The 2 girls were awesome - I was
really proud of Kristy! On Wednesday, May 23 look for Jeff on the Toledo Channel
11 news - this is re-scheduled from 2 weeks ago when the event was rained out.
We have Memorial Weekend off - Dad is taking Julie to see her first Indy 500.
Julie has been asking to go for some time and can't wait to experience the event.
In 2 weeks, we all return to South Bend for the 2nd GLSS Divisional event of the
year - looking forward to returning back to MRP and bringing our Jr. Crew Chief,
Adam Lawrence, along for the trip. Adam has been busy all season behind the scenes
helping out in the garage, but because of school and work, hasn't been able to
make a race trip so we're all looking forward to having him see one of the best
karting facilities in the country for the first time.
Look for the the
latest results and pics at www.Bedfordsports.com (community teams link) One of
our karting friends snapped a ton of pictures of Jeff's charge through the field
in Jacksonville - I hope to get those over to the website in the next week.
As always - thanks to everyone for all of the well wishes and support. Hope
to be doing a few local events in the area for our current (and future???) sponsors
over the next few months.
June
1-3, 2007 South Bend, Indiana We just returned from MRP in South Bend,
Indiana for the WKA Great Lakes Sprint Series (GLSS) Divisionals.... We had a
great weekend!
Friday, we finally had a good, clean day of practice -
no on-track incidents or engine woes and good feedback on the kart from driver
to crew chief. We also had our Jr. Crew Chief, Adam Lawrence, with us for the
weekend so it was all good!. It translated into positive results for the rest
of the weekend.
2nd place, HPV Jr. Sportsman, GLSS at South Bend. (from left to right)
Jeff Myers Sr., Adam Lawrence, Jeff Myers Jr., Brent Ebert
Saturday,
Jeff Jr. got his first pole of the year in Yamaha in the Birel chassis! We don't
always qualify well so I'll always remember Jeff's smile I told him he was P1.
In the both the pre-final and final races, Jeff didn't get the best of starts
and was shuffled back. (Dad thinks it may have been nerves.) Regardless, after
slipping back, Jeff fought back to finish 4th place JUST behind the top 3 karts.
There just wasn't enough laps in the Final for Jeff to get by the top 3 even though
he turned fast lap of the race. Just goes to show you, the fastest kart doesn't
always win! Regardless, we were very happy with the results - congratulations
to Kyle Crump for his divisional win - was great pitting with the Crump family.
Sunday, we woke up to a wet race track, and we ALWAYS look forward to racing
in the rain. Jeff's Birel was fast in practice, but he could only manage 5th in
qualifying in HPV - blame it on Dad for set-up! Intermittent showers were in the
forecast - before the final race, we changed from rain to dry set-ups more in
one day then we have all season. As luck would have it, the conditions dried and
the track officials eliminated the pre-final and extended the laps for the Final
- we were racing with a dry set-up. This time at the start, Jeff got a great jump
from 5th place and moved into 3rd position. Jeff ran a steady race, caught and
passed the 2nd place kart and finished a solid 2nd place behind National Champion,
Cody Humphreys - not bad company!
All in all, it was a great weekend for
us. 1 Pole, a 2nd, a 4th and fast race lap is an awesome divisional result!
Going to miss all of our MRP friends as this was the last big race of the
year at MRP. Will look forward to seeing the MRP folks at the Nationals. Although
Jeff's running a full National and GLSS schedule, we'd like to run a couple local/state/club
races if we can get some additional sponsorship. If any of our friends know of
any opportunities, please pass them on!
Next race will be our first trip
to USA International Speedway in Shawano, Wisconsin for the 3rd of 5 National
races this year. Jeff slipped out of the top 10 National standings with a DNF
at MRP last month, so we're looking to get back in the top 10 with a good finish
next week. Kristy and Julie are also looking forward to this trip since Shawano
features a great off-track park with pool and things for all of the family to
do.
Thanks again to MRP, all of our friends, family and sponsors. Special
thanks to Adam for making the trip with us!
Mid
Season Report... We're
at the mid-point of the season that started out really fast in Jacksonville, Fla.
Jeff Jr. placed an 8th in the first WKA national race of the year in untested
equipment and starting from the back. That really got our hopes up for the next
few months. Unfortunately, we both struggled a bit. Jeff on the driving part and
Dad learning to tune a different chassis. Not only that, Jeff seemed to get caught
up a spins or had contact. We figured once we were back to the GLSS divisionals,
we'd do better. BUT results at the first GLSS race in Circleville weren't what
we hoped for either. We were both getting a bit frustrated!
In mid-May,
we came back to MRP for the 2nd GLSS race and finally had a good solid day of
practice Friday and the weekend results showed we'd made progress. Jeff was also
driving much better - earned a pole in Yamaha and placed 2nd in the HPV Final.
In June, Jeff had solid results at the WKA Grand Nationals in Shawano, 12th in
both classes and was fast all weekend at a 1-mile track we'd never seen before.
After Shawano, we had a few weeks off before the next big race divisional/national
races so we decided to do some club races at both East Lansing and MRP - South
Bend. Against full 10-kart fields, Jeff absolutely rocked scoring clean sweeps
at both club events! 5 Wins, a pole and a new track record - not bad for a couple
weekends off!
Club races: at East Lansing, Jeff won both heats and the
feature in convincing fashion leading all but a handful of laps. At MRP against
some WKA racers, Jeff won the pole breaking a track record (on old tires)! Jeff
led every lap in the pre-final to start first for the final which turned out to
be quite the race. After a little controversy where the outside pole kept jumping
Jeff on the start, the entire front row was penalized and put back one row meaning
Jeff would have to start 3rd. No matter - by turn 1, Jeff was in 2nd. The next
lap he was leading with the 2nd place kart right on his tail. Jeff maintained
1st for the rest of the race with 2nd place right behind the entire race - a lot
of pressure for a 10-yr-old earning him compliments from veterans in the karting
industry who were watching.
The 2 club races validated our 2006 divisional
/ national schedule as Jeff Jr. looks to continue racing against the best in the
country to see where he stacks up. In July, we have 2 WKA races in-a-row on the
schedule - both at Beaverun, PA. Instead of driving back and forth, we'll all
spend the week in PA / West Virgina with a few vacation days off in-between races
to do some sight-seeing.
Last, if any of our friends and family out there
know of any sponsorship opportunities, please feel free to contact them directly
to see if there is any interest in helping out an up and coming racer. The hard
part about racing is the cost. Jeff has reached the level where, in order to find
more challenges, we have to travel further and race bigger events - not sure how
we're going to manage it in the future months. Kristy and Julie travel with us
too and as you can imagine money is tight - we are truly one of the low-budget
teams but Jeff is doing very well with what we have. Jeff is also getting good
local press in the Toledo area and being watched closely by those in the karting
community as he has become a respected racer both on and off the track. WKA has
already announced that Daytona is back on the schedule for 2008 so we hope to
do a fund raiser this Fall in order to make the trip, BUT we could really use
a boost to keep us going this year. Let me know if you can help!
Thanks
to all for asking how things are going and all the well wishes - keep an eye at
www.Bedfordsports.com as updates/new pics are posted there.
Thanks to
our all of our current sponsors - get well fast Jim!
Late
July 2007...
Bedford
Twp.'s Jeff Myers Jr. finished 3rd last Saturday and 4th on Sunday in National
competition last weekend giving him his first national podiums! Saturday, Jeff
qualified 2nd and led for the first time in a National race. The weekend results
places him with the top 5 in the country and will put him back in the top 10 in
points!

Mid
August Report...
We're
about to finish an "unusual" mid-summer break that lasted for a few
weeks. But we'll be back on the road to Norway, Illinois next week for a WKA divisional
race (GLSS). The break gave us a chance to rest up, enjoy some summer days and
save some money! This trip, Kristy gets the chance to visit with a friend who
moved to Illinois and our Jr. Crew Chief, Adam Lawrence, will get the chance to
join us again. Last time Adam came along, Jeff had a great divisional weekend
- Qualified on Pole, placed a 2nd and 4th, and posted fastest race lap in one
of the 2 Finals. Although we've never raced at Norway, we hope to compete for
the win after a 3rd and 4th at the Nationals in Pennsylvania.
We only
have 3 more scheduled races this year. It looks like we're going to pass on the
Michigan State Sprint Championships at East Lansing at the end of August to focus
our efforts on the last national race at New Castle, Indiana in September. Hate
seeing Jeff Jr. miss the State Championships since we don't get many chances to
be back with friends at East Lansing, BUT Jeff really wants that top 10 finish
in the National Points! FYI - the top 30 in the country can be viewed at the WKA
website. http://www.worldkarting.com/pg/series/mc/mc-standings.html
Keep
an ear out for sponsorship opportunities - we REALLY need the help! We'll also
try to do a fund-raiser in November to prepare for the 2008 Daytona trip. How
many 10 yr olds get a chance to race at Daytona International Speedway? Taking
it a step further, how many 10 yr olds have the chance to compete UP FRONT at
Daytona?? We hope to be there!!
Early
September... Jeff Myers Jr. is in the homestretch run of the 2007
karting season - just a handful of races left to go. Last weekend was our first
visit to Norway, Illinois where Jeff competed in WKA Divisionals - the Great lake
Sprint Series at Concept Haulers Motor Speedway. And it was a wet one! We practiced
in the dry on Friday and both Saturday/Sunday mornings, but couldn't escape the
rains when it was time to race in the afternoon. Regardless of weather, Jeff was
up front and fast all weekend!
On Saturday, Jeff qualified 3rd in the
dry and raced to a 2nd place finish with his Yamaha in the wet. Jeff was fast
in Yamaha in the dry and wet, but couldn't get the win in the rain after leading
early in an action filled race.
Sunday in HPV, Jeff qualified 4th in the
dry and raced again to 2nd in the Final. Sunday, Jeff was a bit more careful when
the rains came, but still got to the lead on the first lap. In fact, Jeff led
the entire race with Dalton Prime right on his rear bumper. Dalton, who was fast
all weekend, waited until the last lap and made a nice pass in very slippery conditions
to beat Jeff for the win. The hardest part about racing in the rain is being able
to run side by side to pass without spinning. Great job by both kids to keep it
on the track.
Two 2nd place finishes in a divisional series is another
strong showing. Only a couple more chances left this season to get that divisional
or even a National win. At the end of September, we'll travel to New Castle, Indiana
- just east of Indianapolis - for the last 2 races of the year. We're considering
another race earlier in the month but will have to see how our racing funds look.
