Boys Varsity Basketball
April 2007 - Dan Mahoney

The Bedford boys varsity basketball team finished up the 2006-07 season at Adrian in Districts. Bedford and Adrian met for the third time after splitting two previous head-to-head matchups. Bedford had won the previous game against Adrian with a season low 27 points.

The Districts game began with that same feeling, but Adrian was on the leading end of the scoreboard. With a 16-8 score at halftime, Bedford head coach Bill Ryan had to use halftime to his advantage and get the boys ready to score, as this would prove to be the last game of the season.

Seniors Todd Wagner and Justin Osentoski knocked down a combined 3 three pointers late in the game to make things close, but with little time on the clock, Adrian was able to put the lead out of reach at the free throw line and win the game 43-37.

"We showed some character at the end," said Coach Ryan. The boys finished up with an 8-13 season. Coach Ryan described the season as "a season of streaks."

"We started 5-2, and then hit the meat of the SEC schedule. We were hit with some decisive losses. To their credit, they were able to stay the course. We did what we could with our resources, and the kids were coachable all year." Ryan said.

A season of streaks is exactly what the season was. A pair of two-game winning streaks, a three-game winning streak, mixed with an uncharacteristic four-game losing streak.

Eight seniors ended their basketball careers with the varsity squad-- Justin Osentoski, Joe Osentoski, Mitch Boss, Dave Strouse, Todd Wagner, Josh Albright, Ryan Felix, and Steve Walling.

Wrestling Recap
April 2007 - Nicole Gin

The wrestling team went into the Individual State wrestling tournament with seven qualifiers, and they came home with three State placers and two champions, continuing the Bedford tradition of excellence in wrestling. It is actually the first time in 15 years that the Mules have had two wrestlers win the individual titles.
"I felt like crying after I won, because I've been dreaming about it since I was little," said junior Alex Ortman.
Ortman (152) and senior James Fisher (125) gained their State titles after many years of wrestling experience. They have been wrestling together since their years in elementary school.
"We actually used to hate each other because we had to wrestle against each other. It's cool that winning states was something we could share. Both of us got to be at the top," said Fisher.
Fisher defeated his opponent in the finals, 17-10. Ortman won his match by a score of 10-7. Other placers included senior Colin Arnold (145), who placed fourth, sophomore Nick Whitenberg (189), who placed fifth, and sophomore Billy Osborne (130), who placed sixth.
"I think Bedford is so successful every year because we put in so much hard work throughout the season, and it pays off," said Ortman.
The team's overwhelming success at the Individual State tournament followed their close loss in the semifinals of the Team State tournament the previous weekend. They were defeated by Hartland, 31-25.
Although their goal every year is to win the Team State title, they certainly do have something to celebrate by having two Individual State champions. Ortman will be returning next year, and Fisher plans to continue his wrestling at the college level.
