A
new swimming season brought along with it the first ever
home meet for the girls swim team and many new faces.
The total number of swimmers compared to previous years
has shot up and freshmen make up about one-fifth of the
team. "We have about fifty swimmers," said senior
Vanessa Heasley. "The team is getting bigger and
bigger every year."
The
new freshmen faced a tough task, as many of them have
seen significant chances to show off their talent, and
many of them have risen to the challenge. Some of the
older swimmers have taken freshmen under their wings and
have passed down some of their upper-class wisdom.
"I've just said do everything the coach ever asks
you and just give everything you have while in the pool,"
said Vanessa Heasley. "Always look for the positive,"
said senior Sam Cantrell. "You do better when in
a better mood."

On
September 21, the girls faced a tough Dexter team and
were defeated by a score of 121-65. Freshman Cheyenne
Cousineau broke the diving record for the fourth time
this season with a score of 238. Wins were picked up by
the Lady Mules in the 100 butterfly, the 100 freestyle,
the 200 individual medley, and the 200 medley relay. Prior
to this, the Lady Mules had their first-ever home match
at the YMCA on September 7. BCSN was there to broadcast
the home opener for the girls.
"It was fun because people from the community had
a chance to come see us," said Heasley. "It
gave them a chance to see we're a serious team."
Cousineau broke the diving record for the first time at
the home opener, with a score of 212.15 points. This was
obviously a sign of things to come. On September 14, the
Lady Mules went to Lincoln and soundly defeated them,
141-46. Freshman Kirsten Stark set two school records
in the 50 and 100 freestyle, while Cousineau set the diving
record with 236 points. Senior Shari Harmon took first
in the 200 freestyle, and the 200 freestyle relay team
of Stark, sophomore Kelsey Koren, Harmon, and Vanessa
Heasley also took home first place.
On September 9, the Lady Mules traveled to the Lakeview
Relays. The team finished in sixth, but three different
relay teams took third. Cousineau finished first in the
individual dive with a team record (at the time) of 219
points.
In the season opener, on August 31, the Lady Mules finished
fourth in a competition of ten teams. A school record
was set in the 200 medley relay by the team of senior
Kellie Andrews, sophomore Shannon Heasley, Stark, and
Vanessa Heasley. Firsts were also taken in diving and
in the 4 x 50 butterfly.
Seniors
Highlighted in Tonight's Game 'Senior Night' on minds of Mules Seniors
September 2006 - Dan Mahoney
Twenty-one
varsity football athletes will have more than just tonight's
game against Ypsilanti Lincoln to think about. For some,
Senior Night will mean a lot more than just another game.
Students of the class of '07 will miss the atmosphere
of the rowdy student section that has intimidated the
toughest of schools. The last home game at Bedford Community
Stadium also marks the last time this high
school will probably ever see tailgating.
Senior
wide receiver Brad Mills has played football for Bedford
since his freshman year, even dating back to his years
as a Lambertville Lion.
"Retiring
from football will be hard because of all the years I
have put into it. Our intensity level is going to be really
high, knowing that our seniors will be playing our last
game at home and knowing we need to win," said Mills.

The
Mules seem to be coming full circle at the right time
of the year. A strong offensive performance against Dexter
proves that this team can put up points. Along with the
offense, the defense has learned from their mistakes this
season. Chris Kerekes and Mike Sargent have been senior
leaders for the defense and have come up with timely plays
that have proven crucial in certain wins. Bedford faced
two explosive offenses earlier in the year against Chelsea
and Adrian. The experience that the team gained from those
games should help this defense enormously down the stretch.
Bedford
is going into tonight's game 2-3 and will be leaving everything
on the field because there is still a chance to make the
playoffs. A win in tonight's game means that the team
will need to win their last three games for a guaranteed
spot in the post season. The Railsplitters take the field
0-5, which puts a little more pressure on Bedford to come
out of the gates strong. The Mules have shown that they
can put up big numbers on the offensive side of the ball
with their wins this year. Mitch Boss has been a strong
leader on the field, showing the confidence that coach
Trychel has been looking for in his quarterbacks.
"Mitch
has done a great job so far this year, proving his spot
as the starter on this team," said senior wide receiver
Steve Hall. Mitch hasn't done it alone, though. Wide receivers
Steve Hall and Matt Drew have put up good numbers catching
the ball this season. "I just try to do what I can
on the field to help my team out," said Hall.
The
team encourages everyone to come out tonight, as parents
of all senior football players will be on hand to cheer
on the team's final home game of the season.
Kicking
off the season with a current record of 8-3-2, the boys'
varsity soccer team is off to an excellent start.
"[The best thing about this soccer season is] that
we are having a successful season and winning a lot
of games against tough opponents," said junior
forward Josh Clark.
Last
Thursday, varsity suffered a loss against Tecumseh,
3-1. Tuesday, September 19, the boys tied Chelsea 1-1,
with Andy Brangham scoring the lone goal.
"You have to be mentally ready for every game or
you won't play well," said senior Ben Kirsch.
On
September 16, the boys played at the Alpena Wildcat Shootout,
facing Gaylord, Tawas, and Alpena. The boys defeated Gaylord
2-1 in the first round, with both goals coming from exchange
student Lucas Sansana. They defeated Tawas 2-0 in the
second round, with goals coming from Senior Andy Brangham
and sophomore Kyle Menzel. Bedford faltered in the championship,
however, losing 1-0 against Alpena.
"[The
most important thing we have learned this season is] that
we need to play together as a team to win, and be able
to play good team defense," said Clark.
On September 14, the boys faced Adrian at home, winning
with a final score of 6-0. This game was the fifth shutout
for senior goalie Alex Pavlika. Pavlika also had a shutout
on September 11, mercying Romulus 8-0 in this big time
win.
"[This season, we face the challenge of] playing
together as a team. There are a lot of new kids on varsity.
Also, we need to be careful to not get lazy against bad
teams," said Kirsch.
It's not all fun and games for the boys, however, as they
were crushed by Pioneer on September 7.
"[The hardest match-ups for us the rest of the season
are] when we play Pioneer and Saline again, and Monroe
on community night," said Clark.
The team's next game is away at Lincoln tonight, and the
boys play at home on Saturday against Monroe at the annual
community night.
Conditioning
for girls' tennis started during the summer with running,
tennis skills, drills, and matches with varsitys' coach
Melissa Kurek watching to decide who would be making the
team. Conditioning lasted for two hours and was on every
day of the week for two weeks until tryouts for both JV
and Varsity girls' tennis started. Only 12 girls were
chosen out of the many who tried out for the varsity team
On
August 22, the team played in the Allen Park Invitational,
placing 4th, with Ashley Foster and Lindsay Thompson coming
in second for the team's number two doubles. Katie Jackson
and Janelle Mahoney placed second for the team's number
one doubles, and Amber Mack placed second in number two
singles.
On
August 24 the Varsity team lost against Chelsea, 8-0.
During the girls' August 29 matches, Bedford won against
Plymouth, 7-1. Lindsay Miller played number three singles
and won 6-0, 6-0 in her best set.
On
August 31 Bedford won against Dexter with Alicia Nichols,
Amber Mack, and Lindsay Miller winning their singles matches.
Ashley Foster and Lindsay Thompson won their doubles match,
and Kathy Lorenz and Tara Lohr also won their matches,
giving the team a 5-3 win. The girls also went on to win
on September 3 against Lincoln, by a score of 6-2.
In more recent games Bedford has had two wins, one against
Lincoln and one against SMCC. The girls' lost against
Grosse Ile and took second in the Monroe invitational.

Golf
- make it to states!

The
Bedford boys' varsity golf team set out at the beginning
of the season with one goal in mind: Make it to States.
The beginning of the season showed everyone that this
team wasn't playing around either.
A
strong opening to the season included a school record
296 at Carlton Glen Golf Course, led by senior Joe Freker's
three under 68.
A
second place finish at the Bowsher Invitational was
anchored by senior Dan Mahoney's 76, and a third place
finish at the Bedford Invitational included a 76 by
senior Austin Trychel.
As
of late, though, the Mules haven't performed as well as
they would like. The Monroe County Championship is a prime
example. With a field that included Ida, Summerfield,
and Mason, the team only managed to pull out a second
place finish behind Monroe High School.
The
Mules real season begins on October 5 for the varsity
squad, which will travel to the University of Michigan's
home golf course to compete in the District tournament.
"In past years we have missed out by a few strokes
of making the state tournament. I really hope we can change
that this year," said senior co-captain Sam DeArmond.
The Mules plan to tune up for Districts with upcoming
matches against Tecumseh and Dexter, followed by the Saline
Quad at Brookside Golf Course.
This
year's Lady Mules basketball team is a force to be reckoned
with, even with no seniors and nobody over 5'9''. "We
are more guard-oriented [with six guards] and have a deeper
bench than in years past," said Coach Bill Ryan.
"I do not have a consistent starting line-up. All
ten players on the roster could potentially start."
The
team is looking forward to playing Monroe for their competitive
play and skill level. Adrian has always been considered
a rival, but the girls look forward to playing all 14
league games. The team is preparing for upcoming games
by knowing about their opponent and working on perfecting
their plays.
The
Mules played Lincoln on September 21 with a 55-38 victory.
Junior Tiara Fernandez and sophomore Amelia Davis were
the leading scores with 13 points. Davis also grabbed
nine rebounds and had four steals. Junior Heather Goodwin
had eight points and junior Heather Wegman had eight rebounds.
The
Bedford Lady Mules had an exciting victory over Dexter
on September 14, winning 58-51, after two overtimes. Going
into Dexter, the Mules had a reassuring win from Monroe
Jefferson with a score of 56- 12. Scoring was pretty even
across the board. Junior Jennifer Redmond put up 11 points
and ripped down five rebounds. Amelia Davis had eight
points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Kaylee Foster put
up seven points, ripped down five rebounds, and had seven
steals. Tiara Fernandez put up nine points, and Heather
Wegman scored seven points.
On
September 8, Bedford beat Walled Lake Western 59-58 with
a lay-up at the buzzer by Amelia Davis to get their first
win of the season. Kaylee Foster hit Amelia on the run
with three seconds left on the clock. Foster led the Mules
in scoring with 17 points. She also had five rebounds
and three steals. Davis had nine points, five rebounds,
and four assists. Sophomore Jackie Harrison had eight
points, five rebounds, and four steals. Junior Liz Newsome
scored eight points, grabbed eight rebounds, had four
assists, and snagged three steals.

Cross
Country
September 2006 - Megan McCrory
In
the past two weeks the boys and girls cross country teams
have had a brief lapse in meets, and therefore have been
pushing themselves to improve before the next invitational

each week.
On
August 26 both teams competed in the South Lyon Invitational.

44 points. Top runners for their team included Alex Folk,

use these breaks in meets to rebuild and improve,"
said junior Aloiya Earl.
Overall both teams have had a strong season, but are still
looking to improve.
On
September 14, the junior varsity girls' basketball team
lost 37-28 to Dexter. Bedford got their first win against
Monroe Jefferson by the score of 40-25. Chelsea Wegman
led the scoring (nine points), while Kelsey Woltmann and

SMCC on September 5. They held the lead for much of the
game but gave it up in the last few minutes. Katie Bollin
and Rachel Cousino both played very well, though. Each
player had nine points.
The
JV football team hosted Adrian at home on September 7.
Louis Tormoehlen and Jake Howard played great defense,
while Drew Hendrick and Josh Sedlar worked together to
score on a touchdown pass. The team lost, however, 26-8.
The Mules worked hard to beat the Chelsea Bulldogs, but
were defeated 36-33 after a hard-played game. Touchdowns
were scored by Drew Hendrick, Josh Sedlar, and Zach Shepherd.
When playing Springfield, the team had a great victory,
with a score of 20-6. Josh Sedlar, Nate Davis, and Shane
Sulier all contributed touchdowns to the victory.

21, the boys lost against Tecumseh, 2-0. The Mules succeeded
in their game against Chelsea, 2-0, on September 19. On
September 14, the boys defeated Adrian, 6-1. Alex Thatcher
was the game's lead scorer with four goals. Andrew Althaus
and Mitch Cousino had one goal each. On September 8, Bedford
overpowered Milan 4-0. Against Pioneer, the team had a
difficult loss, 5-0, on September 7. The team tied 1-1
on August 31 against Riverview. On August 29, Saline prevailed
over Bedford, 1-5. Against Milan, Bedford won their season
opener 5-0 on August 24.

girls' junior varsity tennis team has been having a great
season with a record of 2-0-1. At the September 11 match,
