With
only four returning seniors on the varsity hockey team
this year, the boys have been challenged to work with
brand new teammates.
"[One of the biggest challenges we will face is]
we are a very young team. There are only four returning
seniors who have been playing together for a long time.
No one really knows how we're all going to play together,"
said captain Dan Hopkins.
On
Saturday, November 18, the boys lost in a close scrimmage
to Jackson, 2-1. The lone goal came from senior Lucas
Hayden.
"Any Michigan team will be our toughest opponent
this year. They're all really good, and we've had a tough
time against them in the past," said Hopkins.
"We
are going to do well this year. We have a lot of kids
with good hands," said Hopkins.
Bedford also lost their scrimmage against Southview on
Friday, November 17, 4-3. Seniors Chase Krider, Hopkins,
and junior Jesse Bachli were responsible for the three
goals.
The hockey boys opened this season strong, with a win
against Troy, 4-2. Goals were scored by Hopkins, Justin
Snyder, Bachli, and Garry Konawa.
Tryouts
were held over a week-long period. Sixteen players made
the team, with Hopkins as this year's captain. Tryouts
also produced three assistant captains: Krider, Hayden,
and Andy Backus.
"If we lived in Russia, we would be forced to play
hockey, but we live in the United States of America, so
we play hockey because we want to," said Krider.
The
wind, rain, cold, hills, and mud did not stop three individuals
from the boys cross country team at the Regional meet
on October 28. Seniors Alex Folk, John Gulbronson, and
rookie Joe Osentoski overcame these mucky obstacles to
qualify for the State Final meet which took place on November
4 at Michigan International Speedway.
The boys had a week to prepare between Regionals and the
big meet. During that week, they worked on fine-tuning
their performances.
"We tapered down our mileage and focused more on
speed," said Folk.
When the team arrived at MIS, the weather was ideal for
running. It was cool, but not too cold. Conditions were
dry, and there was little wind.
The Bedford group had a strong start, coming across the
mile mark in impressive times. Osentoski and Folk pushed
across in 5:11 and 5:12, respectively. Gulbronson was
right on his teammates' tails in 5:14.
The
team continued to work together, and as they re-entered
the speedway, they knew that they only had about half
of a mile left. The boys poured all of their hard work
that they put into this season onto the course. They knew
that this race was the last State meet of their high school
cross country careers, and they kicked it in towards the
finish line.
In order to earn All-State honors, the runners needed
to place in the top 30. Osentoski, Folk, and Gulbronson
were all right on the border of the All-State mark, and
at such a large and competitive meet, anything can happen
in the last 100 meters. Osentoski surged to the finish,
ending up first for the Mules. Folk also finished hard,
only one second behind him.
The
boys placed 26th and 28th, respectively, both earning
All-State honors and posting personal-best times of 16:05
and 16:06. Gulbronson entered the finish chute only a
few places behind his teammates, placing 38th overall,
with an outstanding time of 16:15. Although he just missed
the All-State qualification marker, Gulbronson earned
Academic All-State honors when he coupled his place with
a 4.0 cumulative GPA. All of the team's 70-mile weeks
and intense workouts paid off.
"I'm glad I was able to finish my career at the State
meet and receive All-State honors, as well as running
a personal best. Right now I am training for possibly
competing in a few post-season meets," said Folk.
All three Mule state qualifiers finished their seasons
and high school cross country careers successfully.
The
rest of the boys team also finished their seasons strong
at the Regional meet. Folk led the team, placing 6th (17:06)
on an extremely wet and muddy course. Gulbronson placed
10th (17:12), followed by Osentoski in 15th (17:18). The
top 15 individuals qualified for States. Tommy Valade
was fourth for the Mules (18:02). He placed 35th overall.
Joe Araiz also performed well, placing 50th (18:47). Jason
Cartell and Aaron Horne rounded out Bedford's varsity
squad, placing 53rd and 56th in a competitive field of
runners. The team placed fourth, but only the top three
teams qualified for States. Although the team did not
make it to the State Final meet, the impressive performances
of the three individuals who qualified still ended the
season on a positive note
For
the first time in school history, the Bedford girls swim
and dive team took their team to States. Seniors Kellie
Andrews, Vanessa Heasley, Sophomore Shannon Heasley, and
freshman Kirstin Stark made up the 200 Medley Relay team.
The team finished 33rd overall in the field, which is
not quite what they wanted going into the race. Kellie
Andrews, however, led off the first leg of the relay and
had the best finish for the team, which put the team in
a good position to finish well.
"This was easily the toughest race we've been in
all year. We swam well, but against tough competition
we faced, you wouldn't be able to tell from the place
we came in," said Vanessa Heasley.
Freshman
Kirstin Stark swam individual races for Bedford. She finished
25th in the 50 meter free and 24th in the 100 meter butterfly.
"As her coach, I have no fear, because she is only
a freshman and has had no previous experience with swimming
at this level. She will be ready next year," said
head coach Holly Scheffer.
As far as the diving was concerned, freshman Cheyenne
Cousineau performed excellent for the team with a 3rd
place finish in the state.
"Cheyenne has proved all year that she can compete
with any level of competition," said senior Lauren
Sulpizio.
Cheyenne was also nominated for All-American honors.
The
girls who participated in states got a second chance to
qualify on November 10 at a qualification meet at Huron
High School. Kirstin Stark had previously qualified for
States as an individual, but she also qualified for one
other race so she had the luxury to choose which races
she would participate in. Diver Cheyenne Cousineau qualified
for States at a qualification meet on November 14.
The
Lady Mules basketball team ended up being District Champions
for their tournament, but lost while at Regional.
The team had one of the best seasons in years for Bedford
High School, with a division record of 6-0 and an overall
record of 15-5. The team did very well this season, because
they had consistency and worked together as a team.
"We had many people contribute regularly all season.
This was my most talented group of girls, from top to
bottom," Coach Bill Ryan said.
The
team's success was due to an overall team effort.
"I am satisfied with the season and very proud of
my team. We were young and had a lot of question marks
entering the season. The team had a great work ethic and
received coaching suggestions well," Coach Ryan said.
The team had two games, Chelsea and Walled Lake Western,
that gave Coach Ryan great memories.
"We
had two games that we went the length of the court with
only three seconds left to score and secure the victory.
Both games were extremely exciting and probably equally
my most memorable."
Teamwork was a big part of their success throughout the
season.
"It was truly a team effort this season. There were
some individuals that could have had fantastic individual
efforts, but worked within our team concept all year.
We had several players average between 5 and 9 points
per game. Many players also chipped in between 3 and 6
rebounds a game. Our balance and depth made us a great
team."
This
Bedford team consisted of only sophomores and juniors,
but still played extremely well, proving that they could
still win and be successful without any seniors on the
team. The girls' greatest quality this season as a team
was their unselfishness.
"Individuals could have worried about statistics
and playing time, but that was never an issue," Coach
Ryan said.
As
a team, the girls bonded and worked together to achieve
the goals that they had planned for themselves this season.
Overall, the team had three goals this season: first,
to win 15 games; second, to win the league championship;
and third, to make a run in the state tournament. All
of these goals were accomplished.
